Botero Art Museum in Bogota

Fernando Botero is a living icon in the Colombian art scene. I saw his work for the first time when I was touring a loft in Castleberry Hill, Atlanta. (my old neighborhood) Botero’s style is so unique it is impossible to confuse him with anyone else. He is the self proclaimed “most Colombian of Colombian artists.” I mentioned to Leah how much I liked his art, and she found a museum of his in Bogota.

Fernando Botero has donated a lot to Medellin (his birthtown) and Bogota, the capital of his birthcountry. In Bogota he built a brilliant art museum in 2000. Donating over $200 million in artwork under the condition that the pieces would stay where he put them. He personally selected the location of all the artwork in the museum. Many of the works are his own (123) as well as artwork from many other artists. Some of the major aritsts include: Picasso, Dali, Monet, and Renoir. Entry to this massive collection is completely free.

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the museum.
